Coming into college as a first year, I never imagined I would join a sorority, let alone found one! My sister and I used to make jokes about sorority girls and all the usual stereotypes, thus, I was skeptical when I went to an interest group meeting with a few of my friends. The meeting was held at this apartment in Isla Vista (where I hadn’t really explored yet) and there were only four other girls who were there: the girls who lived in that apartment; little did I know, this group of about 9 ladies were to become some of my greatest friends. At first, it only seemed that we had two things in common: a passion for STEM and a desire to create something that would last a lifetime. As the weeks passed by, that group of four turned into a group of ten and ultimately a group of thirteen making up the Founding Class. That little apartment on Sabado Tarde became the birthplace of the first chapter of Alpha Sigma Kappa on the west coast. That little apartment turned a small group of girls from acquaintances to friends to sisters, and I could not be more grateful. Flash forward a year, and you catch up to where we are now: one day away from being fully installed as the Xi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Kappa. As a founder, I have been able to be a part of quite a long journey full of stress and hardships starting this organization from the ground. We have all been through the ringer attempting to understand how to create budgets, manage a large group of girls, recruit new members, work with other organizations… the list can go on and on. But, through those hardships, the good times have been abundant with sleepovers, Galantines days, Holiday parties, hikes, and relaxation nights! Again, this has been a tough year for us all, Founders, Alphas, and Betas alike. But it is through that stress that I have truly found my place within UCSB – a sisterhood that I can always count on.
